About Jesus Christ Superstar

Get ready for a powerful musical theatre experience as Jesus Christ Superstar returns to London’s West End at the magnificent Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Combining legendary rock music, dramatic storytelling and spectacular stage production, this celebrated musical brings a fresh intensity to the story of the final days of Jesus Christ.

Following a successful summer season at the London Palladium, the production transfers to Theatre Royal Drury Lane for a strictly limited run from 16 October 2026 to 9 January 2027. Eurovision star Sam Ryder leads the cast as Jesus, bringing his distinctive voice and commanding musical presence to one of theatre’s most iconic roles.

A Legendary Rock Musical

Created by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar first emerged as a concept album before becoming an internationally celebrated stage production. Its distinctive blend of rock music and biblical storytelling helped establish a new direction for musical theatre.

The story follows the final days of Jesus Christ, told largely through the perspective of Judas Iscariot. As Jesus attracts growing crowds and his influence spreads, Judas becomes increasingly concerned about the consequences of his popularity. Political tension rises, relationships become strained and the events leading towards the crucifixion begin to unfold.

Rather than presenting a traditional retelling, the musical explores the personal relationships, conflicting loyalties and difficult choices surrounding these historical events. Its characters are portrayed with emotional complexity, creating a drama that continues to engage audiences across generations.

Unforgettable Songs and Powerful Performances

One of the main attractions of Jesus Christ Superstar is its celebrated soundtrack. The production features some of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s best-known musical numbers, including “Gethsemane”, “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and the electrifying title song, “Superstar”.

These songs combine rock energy with emotional storytelling, giving the cast opportunities to deliver powerful vocal performances while advancing the drama. From moments of personal doubt to the confrontations that drive the story towards its conclusion, the music remains central to the production’s impact.

The London staging is directed by Tim Sheader, with choreography by Olivier Award-winning Drew McOnie and design by Tom Scutt. Together, the creative team brings a contemporary visual approach to this enduring musical.

Sam Ryder Stars as Jesus

Sam Ryder takes the leading role of Jesus following his rise to international recognition as the UK’s Eurovision Song Contest representative in 2022. His performance brings a new interpretation to the character, combining his distinctive rock-influenced vocals with the emotional demands of the story.

He is joined by Tyrone Huntley as Judas Iscariot, Desmonda Cathabel as Mary Magdalene and David Thaxton as Pontius Pilate. The production also features a rotating line-up of guest performers as King Herod during the London engagement, with appearances scheduled across different dates.

Anyone hoping to see a particular performer should check the casting information for their chosen date, as appearances can vary.
